Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
