The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
